The Accidental Video Gamer (MP3)

Stumbling on arcade glee

Bradley Allen set out to achieve one classic pop form and ended up with another. He sought, with his Serge Modular synthesizer, to, as he puts it in the brief note accompanying the resulting track, “patch a three chord progression.” As he also puts it, “But that’s not what happened!” What happened is another classic pop form entirely: the bippity upbeat momentum of and early-1980s video game. He didn’t supply charts or diagrams of his experiment, but whatever it is he set in motion, it certainly took on a life of its own — a spirited and enjoyable one at that.
